The importance of Diction

Good diction in your writing can be revealing of both characters and story. When I speak of diction I am referring to the actual word choice of the author. The lines between style and diction can easily be blurred but they are there. Style is the way you use the words you choose and the voice your readers hear when they read your work. In fiction, accuracy in diction will make your characters and surroundings sound real. It will give your writing credibility and enrich every aspect your story. Great writing uses a well balanced blend of diction and style to create a unique voice. If you are looking for an example of good diction go to your bookshelf and pick a book at random. When you read it pay attention to the vocabulary. When then things in what your reading bend do they strain, crack and then snap? Or do they simply break?
